  Carl Mehrbach

CATALOGUE RAISONNÉ 2005-09

Carl Mehrbach continued to explore representation and figurative art. These are years of transition, search, renewal. Mehrbach continued to be an educator, one moving toward retirement (retirement from education, June 2010). These are years of anticipation, his forward to becoming a full-time art-maker. One hallmark is Mehrbach's insistence on working to diminish the profound influence of his mentor, Philip Guston. Looking back, Mehrbach believes the work from this period is too serious; it thinks too much about the need to separate from Guston's influence, resulting less humor than much of his earlier works.
