Carl Mehrbach studied at Boston University, receiving his M.F.A. in painting in 1979. His chief mentor was Philip Guston. He also studied with James Weeks, Bernard Chaet, John Wilson, Robert D’Arista, Wayne Thiebaud, and Morton Sachs.
