These works were made in the three years immediately following Carl Mehrbach's graduation from Boston University (M.F.A. in painting, May 1979). His primary mentor at Boston University was Philip Guston. In this period Mehrbach made a consistent effort to separate himself from Philip Guston. These works represent Mehrbach's struggle to become free, to become himself.
